Good Vibrations

Everything surrounding us emits vibrations and frequencies. Frequencies are created from the sun, from circuit breakers in our homes, and even our organs - things surrounding us, within us, and even entities not within our visibility. In fact, frequency is the common denominator that we have with every single other thing in the universe.

What we perceive the phenomenon of sound to be is our auditory organs processing the sound waves produced by vibrating, dancing molecules around us. When these sounds are pleasant to the ear, it is in the most literal sense "good vibrations". We incorporate the science of frequencies and sounds in our daily vernacular, exclaiming there were "good vibes" at a party, or two people that are simpatico are operating on the same frequency or wavelength.

If mathematics is the language of the universe, music is its voice.

When an array of sounds come together as melodies, harmonies, and percussions, we have music. Music is an art and science. Music both expresses and has the power to incite a spectrum of emotions, from nostalgia, love, heartbreak, anger, and exuberance. It is subjective and often open to interpretation. There's tension and relief. There's crescendos and drops. There's a variety of rhythmic nuances rooted in the fabric of different cultures. But it's also a science. To create harmonies is to follow a code of notes, measured in mathematical differences. The rhythmic pacing of music is noted in fractions. This is why AI is able to develop music. But this is also why a human without education in science or mathematics can also create enjoyable music.

This is the dichotomy of music. Much like our societal customs, what flavor profiles we prefer in our food, and fashion, what type of music we initially enjoy is largely influenced by our culture. Earlier I wrote "pleasant" sound, pleasant obviously being a subjective experience. Western music uses the Ionic mode of music, mode meaning the music scale coupled with a set of melodic characteristics. Other cultures use different modes, which makes music filled with endless possibilities.

The power of music is what compels me to write, research, and develop my musicianship. I've spent time listening, playing, and going to music oriented events more than anything I've done beyond time spent in school, work, and sleep. It hypnotizes, comforts, challenges, and energizes me. I know it impacts other people's lives greatly and my goal is to uncover why, how exactly is our body responding, and how do I create content that compounds these effects. I will be writing content around the psychology of music, what benefits we can uncover, as well as share some of my own music that I've composed and produced as well as existing music that I think represents the above. I hope this content resonates with you in some way.
